The TAC for the western population of Atlantic tuna should be kept at 1,750 metric tons while the TAC for the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea should remain at 13,400t, said Shana Miller, program manager for global tuna conservation with the Ocean Foundation, which is a Pew grantee.

Pew made the comments after the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tuna’s (ICCAT) Standing Committee on Research and Statistics updated its 2012 stock assessments on Friday at a meeting in Madrid.

The results will be posted on ICCAT’s Web site later this week, Miller said Monday on a conference call where she detailed the committee’s findings.

ICCAT did not respond to a request for comment by the time of publication.

ICCAT member nations at a meeting in Genoa, Italy, in November will decide on quotas for both populations of Atlantic bluefin based on the new stock assessment and advice. Western Atlantic bluefin are mostly fished by the United States, Canada and Japan while the eastern population is mostly fished by the European Union.
