Flera isländska fiskeriföretag som är verksamma med fiske och förädling av vitfisk har lagt upp sina frystrålare, sålt av dem eller planerar att sälja dem. Orsaken är att de idag är större efterfrågan på färskfisk än på fryst fisk. Dessutom är lönekostnaderna lägre på ryska frystrålare än på isländska varvid det blir än svårare för islänningar att sälja fryst fisk.
Därför har isländska företag som Stalskip, HB Grandi, Fisk Seafood och Brim Seafood sålt frystrålare. Ögurvik och Thorbjörn har lagt upp frystrålare medan Ögurvik också i likhet med Visir planerar att sälja:
Icelandic fishing and processing firm Visir plans to close three plants and reduce its fleet by one vessel, citing the decline in fish prices and the need to focus on fresh fish production and be more flexible.
Visir, which still owns 30% of Canada’s Ocean Choice International (OCI), plans to close its plants in Thingeyri, in the west fjords of Iceland, Husavik, in the north east and Djupivogur in the east fjords.
Under the proposed reorganization, Vísir would transfer in stages all land-based processing activities to its plant in Grindavik, while working with local companies to develop new employment opportunities in the areas where the other three plants are based.
Visir also plans to reduce its fleet of five longliners to four, according to a statement from Petur Palsson, the managing director of the company.
“Significant changes have taken place in the international markets for Icelandic groundfish. Prices have fallen by 20% and markets are increasingly moving toward fresh fish while demanding flexibility in production and tighter delivery schedules,” said Palsson.
“To accommodate these changes, Vísir will review consolidation of its land-based processing activities in Grindavik with the goal to restore the company’s operating margin, which fell by 50% between 2012 and 2013, while providing employment opportunities for its current workforce,” he said.
Samma utveckling är också synbar i Norge. Frystrålare för vitfisk säljs och istället satsas det på färskfisktrålare. Istället återfinns allt fler frystrålare under rysk flagg.
